Donald Trump is one of the leading candidates running in the 2024 presidential elections. He is also considered to appear in Miami Federal Court for the purpose of an initial appearance for his case.
Trump will be facing charges in the Federal Court for the conviction of having unlawful possession of confidential national security documents of the US. He is also facing charges of lying to officials who have tried to recover them.
Donald Trump has stated his innocence and vowed to continue in his election campaign. Along with the hope of regaining the presidency in the year 2024.
In spite of Trump’s legal issues, it has been observed that his political popularity has not been hampered.
This means amongst Republican voters, it has been noted that Donald Trump is still a popular presidential candidate.
A poll conducted by Reuters states that 81% of Republicans believe that the charges against Trump are politically motivated. The poll has also stated that Trump has a probability of leading his rivals in the presidential race by a vast margin.
Donald Trump has also accused the current US president, Joe Biden, of developing federal charges against him to hamper his presidential campaign. Biden has passed zero comments against this accusation.
Presidential candidate Chris Christie, when questioned with the statement whether Biden is behind the federal case against Trump, has stated it to be “untrue”.
This is because the evidence against Donald Trump is highly damning that is against the ex-US president.
Moreover, Trump is the first president in US history to have faced criminal charges. However, legal experts have said that these charges do not restrict Trump from running for presidential campaigns or presiding in office even if found guilty.
Legal specialists, including Trump’s ex-attorney general William Barr, have stated the federal charges against Trump is a strong one. This is because the charge has violations that include violation of the ‘Espionage Act’ that criminalizes unlawful possession of defense information.
Along with conspiracy for obstruction of justice that could lead to a jail term of a minimum of 20 years.
Further, it has also been noted the criminal trials against Trump regarding unlawful possession of defense information will not be conducted before November 2024. This is because Trump will have to face a trial for the purpose of providing ‘hush money’ to a former porn star in New York in March 2024.
So, despite facing federal charges, Trump is considered to be one of the most popular presidential candidates amongst Republican voters in the United States.
