By Republican George Santos is now going through expulsion from the U.S. House of Representatives. There were allegations of corruption and campaign fund misuse.
Fellow lawmakers voted to end his brief tenure due to the criminal charges against him. The indictment led to Santos’ removal.
Thus, there remains concerns over ethical conduct and the misuse of campaign funds.
People have begun to question the House’s commitment to ethics and accountability through its actions. Santos’ expulsion aims to reconfirm their stand toward integrity and transparency in public office.
The House tallied 311-114 votes. Thus, this met the two-thirds majority needed to promptly remove a first-term legislator from office.
Amid numerous scandals of false claims the Congressman was facing federal indictment and a Congress inquiry. Thus, Santos, aged 35, became the sixth House member to be cast out.
This New York representative’s expulsion was the first removal not under Confederacy service or a criminal conviction.
After the vote, sporadic applause echoed through the House chamber.
Santos, in his statement, said, “You know what? As unofficially already no longer a member of Congress, I no longer have to answer a single question from you guys.”
“To hell with this place,” he further added.
Later in the day, a Capitol staff member replaced the lock on Santos’ old office door, removing the sign with his name. Outside, a small bunch of pink flowers had been left on the floor.
