Netanyahu’s Controversial Reform: Will It Pass?

– Tweet by Israel’s Opposition Party Leader

“If Netanyahu goes ahead with the coup unilaterally, as he has stated, he will find that he is the Prime Minister of less than half of the people of Israel, less than half the economy, less than half of the defence establishment, and less than half of the Knesset”

Reuters reports: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the intention to take active measures about a contentious judicial overhaul due this week.

He addressed his cabinet in a televised event. Here, he provided limited information following the negotiations of the opposition leaders of Israel last week.

The Israeli prime minister has expressed concerns about the unproductive compromise discussions with the political opposition for months.

The religious-nationalist coalition party of Netanyahu came into power in December of 2022. On Sunday, he made it clear that he would take active steps after a month of compromise talks with the merely wasteful opposition.

This remark came after the country’s opposition leaders suspended negotiations before discussion on the key panel for judges could come fruition.

The reforms proposed by the ruling party would take back powers from the nation’s Supreme Court and get more power to the government. The powers in question were related to the appointment of judges to the bench.

This proposed legislation saw protests from all over the country. The opposition went on to claim corruption charges against the Prime Minister, who is currently on trial. Mr. Netanyahu has been accused of trying to curb judicial independence in the country.

The ruling party, headed by the Prime Minister, claims that they wanted a balance of power in the country. They wanted to end the overreach of the judicial wing in the country.

Both the opposition and Israel’s allies had voiced concerns for democracy after this proposed reform.

In March, the Prime Minister said they were willing to enter into a compromise after negotiations.

The Prime Minister has said that negotiation talks with the opposition went on month after month without reaching the most basic understanding. Therefore, he found this intention of negotiation to have been a waste of time.

Netanyahu’s party holds 64 out of a total of 120 seats in the Parliament. Therefore even in this state of no negotiation, the party can pass the vote of reform.

The opposition leader of Israel, Mr. Lapid, suggested that the Prime Minister is not certain of the majority because coalition members took a secret ballot in favor of the opposition lawmaker.

The opposition leader has treated that if the prime minister goes ahead with this coup unilaterally, he will be serving as the Prime Minister for less than half the population of Israel.
