Jay-Z, Timbaland, And Ginuwine Win Lawsuit Over Sampling Allegations

Jay-Z Timbaland And Ginuwine Win Lawsuit Over Sampling Allegations

Jay-Z, the Rapper, Beyonce’s husband, producer Timbaland, and Ginuwine, an R&B singer, has been successful in convincing a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit. A federal judge from the city of Manhattan has ordered the dismissal of the lawsuit.

The lawsuit in question was originally filed by soul musician Ernie Hines. Through it, he held that Jay-Z, Timbaland, and Ginuwine had illegally sampled one of his songs.

Ernie’s song was from one of his albums in 1969.

Judge Paul Oetken, a federal district judge of the United States, delivered the ruling on Monday. The ruling was on Jay-Z’s controversial song called “Paper Chase” and Ginuwine’s “Toe 2 Toe,” which were both co-written with Timbaland. Both the songs also had Timbaland as their producer in the late 1990s.

The ruling stated that the song did not stand in violation of Hines’ rights.

“Help Me Put Out The Flame (In My Heart)” is the song that Hines claims was sampled. His attorney has not officially given any comments on the matter.

Warner Music (WMG.O) is a defendant in the case. Their representatives have also declined to comment.

Mr. Hines has first filed the lawsuit way back in the year 2019. Hines had argued that they had copied a part of his song’s introduction. The defendants, on the other hand claimed that the part in question was not even eligible for a copyright.

Oetken did state that Hines’ work “borrows from a heavily used work that is in the public domain”. The judge added that it “adds only material that is not original enough to be copyrightable.”
